30 Etsy Shop Ideas That Follow Etsy's Rules (and Where Else They Sell)

The best Etsy shop ideas are things Etsy actually lets you sell: items you make, items you design, vintage you handpick (20 years old or more) and craft supplies. For a new shop, that usually means vintage clothing or decor, handmade candles, jewelry or ceramics, upcycled pieces, printables, or craft supplies. Below are 30 Etsy shop ideas, each checked against Etsy's rules, with where else it sells.

Short on time? Pick the line that sounds like you:

    • You want the lowest start-up cost: printables and other digital downloads. No stock and no shipping.
    • You already own things 20+ years old: vintage clothing, decor and collectibles. These also sell on eBay, Depop and Poshmark.
    • You make things by hand: candles, ceramics, jewelry and woodwork. These also sell in your own Shopify store.
    • You like fixing things up: upcycled clothing and restored furniture. Every piece is one of a kind, and they also sell on Depop and OfferUp.
    • You want to sell gifts: personalized jewelry and custom pet portraits. These are mostly an Etsy market.
    • You want buyers who come back: craft supplies and sewing patterns.
    • You planned to resell new stock: skip Etsy for that. New, mass-produced goods break its rules.

Every idea below ends with two notes. Etsy rule tells you which of Etsy's four allowed categories it fits, so your listings don't get taken down. Also sells on tells you where else the same item finds buyers, which matters most when you only have one of it.

What Can You Sell on Etsy?

Etsy allows four kinds of items, set out in its Creativity Standards: things made by you, designed by you, handpicked by you and sourced by you. Every idea in this guide fits one of them. Listings that don't fit can be removed, and you still pay their listing fees.

Sourced by youCraft supplies, party supplies, and items personalized with a buyer's text or imageYarn, beads, party decor, custom name items

Can you resell on Etsy? Only vintage that's 20+ years old, craft and party supplies, and themed gift baskets you put together yourself. New stock bought wholesale doesn't qualify, and neither does newer secondhand, like a designer bag from 2015 or a used Zara jacket. A new item made to look old doesn't count as vintage either. Those pieces belong on Poshmark, Vestiaire Collective or eBay instead.

Vintage Etsy Shop Ideas (Handpicked, 20+ Years Old)

Vintage is a quick way into Etsy if you already thrift, collect or have an attic full of old things. Every item must be at least 20 years old, and Etsy can ask for photos or details that show an item's age and source. Because each piece is one of a kind, vintage is also where listing on more than one site matters most.

    1. Vintage Clothing and Denim

Old Levi's, band tees, 1970s dresses and workwear make good first stock for a vintage clothing shop. Put the decade in the title ("1970s maxi dress"), because that's the word vintage buyers type, and give flat measurements (pit to pit, waist, length), since vintage sizes run smaller than today's labels.

Etsy rule: handpicked vintage, 20+ years old. Also sells on: Depop, Poshmark and eBay, plus Grailed for menswear.

    2. Vintage Designer Bags and Accessories

A Coach bag from the 1990s or a silk scarf from the 1980s can go on Etsy. A designer bag from 2015 can't, because it's under 20 years old. Photograph the serial tag or date code where the brand uses one, plus the corners, hardware and lining, since those are the details buyers check.

Etsy rule: handpicked vintage, 20+ years old. Also sells on: Poshmark, eBay and Vestiaire Collective, which reviews every listing before it goes live.

    3. Vintage Jewelry

Costume pieces, sterling silver and signed brooches make easy gifts. Put any maker's mark and metal stamp (925, 14K) in the title, and photograph the clasp and the back.

Etsy rule: handpicked vintage, 20+ years old. Also sells on: eBay, Poshmark and Depop. Our vintage jewelry selling guide covers pricing and photos.

    4. Vintage Kitchenware and Barware

Pyrex, Fire-King, brass candlesticks, cocktail glasses and enamel pots all count as vintage once they're 20+ years old. Collectors search by maker and pattern, so name both ("Pyrex Butterprint mixing bowl"), and double-box anything made of glass.

Etsy rule: handpicked vintage, 20+ years old. Also sells on: eBay and your own Shopify store.

    5. Vintage Toys, Games and Collectibles

Toys, board games, figurines and memorabilia fit Etsy's vintage rule once they pass the 20-year mark. If a set is complete or still has its original box, say so in the title.

Etsy rule: handpicked vintage, 20+ years old. Also sells on: eBay and Whatnot.

    6. Vintage Books, Magazines and Ephemera

Old cookbooks, children's books, maps, postcards and magazines work as decor and gifts as well as reading. Etsy's own rules use a 1940s copy of The Little Prince as an example of vintage.

Etsy rule: handpicked vintage, 20+ years old. Also sells on: eBay.

    7. Mid-Century Furniture and Lighting

Lamps, side tables and chairs from the 1950s to the 1970s are worth the hunt, but big pieces cost a lot to ship. Ship the lamps and small tables, and sell the large pieces to buyers nearby.

Etsy rule: handpicked vintage, 20+ years old. Also sells on: OfferUp for local pickup in the US, and eBay for lamps and smaller pieces. More in our vintage furniture reselling guide.

Upcycled and Hand-Altered Etsy Shop Ideas

Upcycled pieces count as "made by you" on Etsy when you change them with real craft skills. Etsy's own examples include sewing patches onto a denim jacket and reupholstering furniture with new fabric. Like vintage, each piece is one of a kind, so it can sell anywhere, but only once.

    8. Reworked and Upcycled Clothing

Patchwork denim, re-cut vintage tees and jackets with hand-painted backs appeal to buyers who want something nobody else has. If you have before-and-after photos, show them.

Etsy rule: made by you (hand altered or hand assembled). Also sells on: Depop and Poshmark.

    9. Painted and Restored Furniture

Chalk-painted dressers, re-caned chairs and reupholstered stools turn cheap thrift finds into pieces worth more. Price for your time and materials, not just what the piece cost you.

Etsy rule: made by you (hand altered). Also sells on: OfferUp, where buyers pick up locally.

    10. Jewelry Made From Vintage Parts

Old buttons, beads, charms and broken chains become new necklaces and earrings. Etsy counts attaching charms to a chain with jewelry tools as hand assembled, so these qualify as handmade.

Etsy rule: made by you (hand assembled). Also sells on: Depop, eBay and your own store.

    11. Hand-Embroidered and Hand-Painted One-Offs

Embroidered jackets, painted sneakers and stitched tote bags let you sell your style on a ready-made base. Etsy's example of a hand-altered item is embroidering flowers onto a tote bag. A single stick-on decoration isn't enough to count.

Etsy rule: made by you (hand altered). Also sells on: Depop and Poshmark.

Use your own photos. For anything made by you or handpicked by you, vintage included, Etsy requires photos of the real item you're selling. Craft and party supplies are the exception: their listings can use the manufacturer's images.

    Handmade Etsy Shop Ideas

Handmade is the heart of Etsy, and many makers sell the same design in small batches. Etsy counts items made with power tools as handmade, and items made on your own laser cutter, 3D printer or Cricut too, as long as you designed them.

    12. Candles and Wax Melts

Soy candles, wax melts and candles poured into vintage tins are cheap to make in batches. Give each scent a clear name, and say how long the candle burns.

Etsy rule: made by you. Also sells on: your own Shopify or WooCommerce store.

    13. Soap and Bath Products

Cold-process soap, bath bombs and lip balms work well as gift sets. Keep the copy to ingredients and scent: Etsy's Prohibited Items Policy covers items that make medical claims, so never say a product treats or cures anything.

Etsy rule: made by you. Also sells on: your own store.

    14. Ceramics and Pottery

Mugs, planters, spoon rests and small dishes, thrown or hand-built in your studio. Show scale in your photos with a hand or a familiar object, and test your packing before your first sale.

Etsy rule: made by you. Also sells on: your own store and eBay.

    15. Handmade Jewelry

Beaded bracelets, wire-wrapped stones and stamped metal pieces sit in one of Etsy's biggest categories. To stand out, pick a narrow style (birthstones, minimal gold, chunky resin) instead of "jewelry" in general.

Etsy rule: made by you. Also sells on: Depop, eBay and your own store.

    16. Knitted and Crocheted Pieces

Hats, blankets, baby sets and plush toys take hours, so price for your time. Crochet tops and cardigans also suit fashion buyers.

Etsy rule: made by you. Also sells on: Depop for pieces people wear, and your own store.

    17. Woodwork and Home Decor

Cutting boards, shelves, signs and small furniture. Etsy's own example of a handcrafted item is a chair built with a power saw and sander, so power tools are fine.

Etsy rule: made by you. Also sells on: your own store, eBay, and OfferUp for big pieces.

    18. Original Art

Paintings, drawings and collages are one of a kind by nature. Sell the originals, and if a piece gets a lot of interest, offer prints of it as a second listing.

Etsy rule: made by you. Also sells on: eBay and your own store.

    19. Laser-Cut and 3D-Printed Designs

Earrings, ornaments, signs, organizers and miniatures made on your own laser cutter, 3D printer or Cricut count as made by you, as long as you designed them. Printing someone else's files doesn't qualify.

Etsy rule: made by you (computerized tools, your own design). Also sells on: your own store and eBay.

Digital and Print-on-Demand Etsy Shop Ideas

These are "designed by you" ideas: your design, delivered as a download or made by a production partner. They're cheap to start because there's no stock, which also means plenty of competition, so pick a narrow niche. If a partner makes the item, Etsy requires you to disclose them in the listing.

There's no stock to run out of and nothing to sell twice, so these ideas don't need a cross-listing tool. Etsy and your own website cover them.

Using AI? Etsy allows designs you generate with AI from your own prompts, as long as the listing description says AI was used. The design has to come from you: someone else's work, rebundled, doesn't count.

    20. Printables and Planners

Budget sheets, meal planners, habit trackers and kids' activity pages, sold as PDF downloads. One file can sell again and again.

Etsy rule: designed by you (digital download). Also sells on: your own website.

    21. Digital Wall Art

Art files that buyers download and print at home or at a print shop. Include the common frame sizes in one download. A bundle or scan of someone else's work isn't allowed.

Etsy rule: designed by you (digital download). Also sells on: your own website.

    22. Templates (Invitations, Social Posts, Resumes)

Editable wedding invitations, menus, social media templates and resumes. Etsy doesn't allow AI prompt bundles, so sell finished designs, not prompts.

Etsy rule: designed by you (digital download). Also sells on: your own website.

    23. Sewing, Knitting and Crochet Patterns

If you already make things, the pattern is a second product from the same work. Show clear photos of the finished piece and state the skill level.

Etsy rule: designed by you (digital download). Also sells on: your own website.

    24. Print-on-Demand Designs

Your designs on tees, mugs, totes and phone cases, printed and shipped by a production partner when an order comes in. You must disclose that partner in your listing.

Etsy rule: designed by you (production partner). Also sells on: your own store, connected through your print partner's app.

    Personalized Etsy Shop Ideas

Personalized items are made to order with a buyer's name, date or photo, which makes them natural gifts. Your first photo must show a finished, personalized example, not a blank item or "Your Text Here".

    25. Personalized Jewelry

Name necklaces, initial rings and engraved bracelets. Show three or four finished examples with different names, so buyers can picture theirs.

Etsy rule: made by you, or sourced by you if a production partner personalizes it. Also sells on: mostly Etsy, plus your own website.

    26. Custom Pet Portraits

Painted, drawn or digital portraits made from a buyer's photo. If you use AI tools to make them, Etsy requires you to say so in the description.

Etsy rule: made or designed by you. Also sells on: mostly Etsy, plus your own website.

    27. Wedding and Event Details

Welcome signs, place cards, cake toppers and table decor. Party supplies are an allowed category, but generic resold items with everyday uses, like plain tableware or costumes, aren't.

Etsy rule: made, designed or sourced by you. Also sells on: mostly Etsy.

Craft Supply and Curated Etsy Shop Ideas

Craft and party supplies are where Etsy lets you resell commercial products: tools and materials for making things by hand, and decorations for special events. Etsy also allows items from nature and themed gift baskets you put together yourself.

    28. Craft Supplies and Destash

Yarn, fabric, beads, buttons, paintable blanks and craft kits. Vintage supplies, like old buttons or 1970s fabric, appeal to makers who want materials nobody else has. Ready-to-use blanks, like plain t-shirts or tumblers, don't count.

Etsy rule: sourced by you (craft supplies), or handpicked vintage if 20+ years old. Also sells on: eBay and your own store.

    29. Items From Nature

Rocks, geodes, shells, fossils, dried flowers and plant cuttings that you found or grew yourself. Bulk stones bought from a store don't count, and plants have their own rules.

Etsy rule: handpicked by you (items from nature). Also sells on: eBay.

    30. Themed Gift Baskets

A "new dog parent" box or a "book lover" bundle, filled with different kinds of items you picked to fit the theme. Etsy wants every item listed in the description, and a generic mystery box doesn't qualify.

Etsy rule: handpicked by you (gift baskets). Also sells on: your own store.

How to Pick the Right Etsy Shop Idea

Pick the idea that passes five checks: Etsy allows it, you can keep it stocked, the price covers Etsy's fees and postage, buyers already search for it, and you'd enjoy doing it for a year. If you're still deciding what to sell on Etsy, run each idea through these before you buy supplies.

    1. Etsy allows it. Match it to one of the four categories above. If it doesn't fit, it doesn't belong on Etsy, however well it sells elsewhere.
    2. You can keep it stocked. A maker needs to make 10 more next month. A vintage seller needs a steady source, such as thrift stores, estate sales or auctions. Our inventory sourcing guide covers where to look.
    3. The price still works after fees and postage. In the US, Etsy charges $0.20 per listing, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping, and 3% + $0.25 for payment processing. On a $50 order with free shipping (before sales tax), that's $5.20, so you keep $44.80 before postage and materials. Our Etsy fees guide has the full breakdown, and the fee calculator does the math for any price.
    4. Buyers already search for it. Start typing the idea into Etsy's search bar and read the suggestions that drop down, since they come from real searches. Then look at the shops that come up and ask what you would do differently. Our Etsy SEO guide shows how to turn those searches into titles and tags.
    5. It can sell in more than one place. One-of-a-kind items reach more buyers when they're listed on more sites. That's the next section.

Selling gifts? List gift-friendly ideas, like candles, ornaments and personalized jewelry, before the holiday rush starts, so they're live when gift shoppers arrive.

Which Etsy Shop Ideas Also Sell on Other Sites?

Physical items that are one of a kind or made in small batches: vintage, upcycled, handmade and collectibles. The same piece can find a different buyer on eBay, Depop, Poshmark, Grailed, Vestiaire Collective, Whatnot, OfferUp or your own Shopify store. Digital downloads, print on demand and personalized orders have no stock to run out of, so a cross-listing tool adds little there.

The more places a one-off piece is listed, the sooner it finds its buyer. The risk is selling it twice. If the brass lamp sells on eBay at 9:00 and someone buys it on Etsy at 9:05, you're refunding an excited buyer and hoping they don't leave a bad review. Our guide to avoiding overselling covers the manual ways to prevent it.

A Worked Example: 60 Vintage Pieces on Three Sites

Say you have 60 vintage pieces on Etsy and want them on eBay and your own Shopify store too. If retyping one listing takes you 5 minutes per site, that's 60 × 2 × 5 = 600 minutes, or 10 hours, before anything sells. After that, every sale means delisting the piece in two other places by hand.

With Voolist, you import your Etsy listings in one click, select all 60, add any missing details in one short step, and publish them in bulk. They go live on eBay and Shopify in the background. Voolist maps your details to each site's categories and fields, so you don't fill in a separate form for each one. When the brass lamp sells on eBay, Voolist removes it from Etsy and Shopify within seconds.

Making things in small batches? Voolist keeps your stock count in sync: sell 3 of your 12 mugs on Etsy, and your Shopify store shows 9.

"Voolist helped me increase sales. I was selling only on my Shopify store before, but once I started listing my products on eBay and other platforms, I saw more orders coming in. It is very simple to use and made a huge difference for my business."

    • Megan Smith, Small Business Owner

Voolist connects 11 platforms: eBay, Poshmark, Depop, Etsy, Grailed, Whatnot, OfferUp and Vestiaire Collective, plus your own Shopify, BigCommerce or WooCommerce store. eBay, Etsy, Shopify, BigCommerce and WooCommerce connect directly. The rest connect through the free Voolist Chrome extension. Your Etsy shop connects through Etsy's official API. For the full process, see our guides to cross-listing from Etsy and cross-listing in general.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What sells best on Etsy?

Etsy's 2025 annual report names its six biggest categories: home and living, jewelry and accessories, apparel, craft supplies, paper and party supplies, and toys and games. Together they made up about 85% of the $10.5 billion buyers spent on Etsy that year. Inside those categories, a narrow niche is easier to stand out in than a broad one: a shop of 1970s brass decor is easier to find than one more "home decor" shop.

What cannot be sold on Etsy?

Anything outside Etsy's four allowed categories, such as new, mass-produced goods you didn't make, design or (for vintage) personally pick. On top of that, Etsy's Prohibited Items Policy bans or restricts items like weapons, drugs, recalled products and items that make medical claims. Listings that break the rules can be removed, and you still pay their listing fees.

Can you resell items on Etsy?

Only vintage items that are at least 20 years old, craft and party supplies, and themed gift baskets you put together yourself. New products bought wholesale, and secondhand items under 20 years old, aren't allowed, even if they look vintage. Those belong on eBay, Poshmark or Depop instead. Our guide to items to buy in bulk and resell covers where wholesale goods sell.

What is the easiest thing to sell on Etsy as a beginner?

Whatever you can start with this week. If you have things 20+ years old at home, vintage costs nothing to stock. If you design, printables need no stock or shipping. If you already make something, list that before you buy new supplies, and add a second product once the first one sells.

Can I make $10,000 a month on Etsy?

It's possible, but it's far above average. Etsy's 2025 annual report shows $10.46 billion in Etsy marketplace sales across 5.6 million active sellers, which works out to about $1,870 per seller for the whole year. That average includes very small shops, but $10,000 a month is still about 64 times it.

    Is Etsy still worth it?

Yes, if what you sell fits Etsy's rules and your prices cover the fees. Etsy had 86.5 million active buyers at the end of 2025, according to its annual report. The bigger risk is depending on one marketplace: when Etsy search changes, your views change with it, which is a good reason to have a second place to sell.

Can you sell the same item on Etsy and eBay?

Yes. Lots of Etsy sellers list the same pieces on eBay, Depop or their own store too. The catch is the double sale: when a one-of-a-kind item sells on one site, it has to come down from the others right away. Vintage sellers coming the other way can follow our eBay to Etsy guide for vintage sellers.

Start With One Idea, Then Sell It in More Places

You don't need 30 Etsy business ideas. You need one that Etsy allows, that you can keep stocked and that still makes money after fees. Pick it this week:

    • Check the rule first. Match your idea to one of Etsy's four categories before you buy anything.
    • List 10 items, not 100. See what sells, then make or source more of that.
    • Add a second site for one-of-a-kind pieces. Vintage, upcycled and handmade items reach more buyers on eBay, Depop or your own store.

When your shop has pieces worth showing in more than one place, Voolist lists them on Etsy and ten more platforms from one form, and takes each one down everywhere else when it sells. Every feature is on every plan, from $19.99 a month, with a 14-day money-back guarantee.
